CIPP/E Exam July 2021 Updates

In order to keep pace with the rapid changes occurring in the privacy field, the IAPP annually updates exams in order to reflect the trends in the privacy industry. These exams include the Certified International Privacy Professional/Europe (CIPP/US), Certified International Privacy Technologist (CIPT), Certified International Privacy Manager (CIPM), and of course, the Certified International Privacy Professional/Europe (CIPP/E).

The CIPP/E is a privacy certification that demonstrates your understanding and application of European data protection laws. Successful completion of the CIPP/E exam depends on a number of factors including accurately identifying and understanding the annual exam structural and content-based changes which account for 10% of the exam.

Recently the IAPP released the CIPP/E exam July 2021 updates and there have been alterations to both the CIPP/E Body of Knowledge and Exam Blueprint. While major structural details of the CIPP/E exam, such as the number of exam questions in each segment and in total, have not been changed, the content covered has undergone minor changes.

The three main topics of updated material that all CIPP/E test-takers must be aware of per the IAPP release are as follows:

  • Machine Learning

  • Ethics Related to AI

  • Transfer Impact Assessments

“Machine Learning” and “Ethics Related to AI” expand upon previous categories; however, more focus should be given to current and future privacy laws based on AI and machine learning, new AI regulation proposals, and discourse surrounding

EU AI ethics regulation. “Transfer Impact Assessments” involves material on assessing and protecting global data flows, particularly in regards to the 2020“Schrems II” ruling. Knowledge of transfer mechanisms and Transfer Impact Assessments are recommended.

The CIPP/E exam July 2021 updates will go into effect on 1 July 2021. As the updated CIPP/E exam changes in content are not necessarily reflected in even the most recent version of the textbook, supplemental studying is highly crucial. Additional reading materials, such as the Schrems II Decision and IAPP articles related to the exam updates can provide CIPP/E test- takers with the information that they require for the exam.

An even better method of ensuring success on the CIPP/E is understanding both the general CIPP/E information and the CIPP/E July 2021 exam updates. As the CIPP/E mainly focuses on the GDPR, it is imperative that test takers not only understand the law but can also apply the concepts.
